Daily Debate: If You Could Have an AI Personalized After Your Favorite Zelda Companion, Who Would You Pick? - Zelda Dungeon (2024)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is all over the news and continues to be pushed into the limelight by Big Tech companies. Open AI and Google each had recent public demonstrations of the next iteration of their forthcoming AI services and its new features. One of the eye-catching features demonstrated is the conversational prowess of the AI to eloquently hold dialogue while understanding context and bringing personality and flair in ways that are leaps and bounds more advanced than what Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google Assistant have done to date. Assuming the various legal hurdles of Intellectual Property (IP) law can be surmounted, could the AI take on the personality of a fictional character of your favorite movie, book, and/or video game as a customization feature?

With that question in mind, I decided to test for myself the current capabilities of Google’s Gemini AI chatbot and enter two different prompts four times over with characters from The Legend of Zelda. Each iteration looked at four of Link’s most notable companions: Navi from Ocarina of Time, the King of Red Lions from The Wind Waker, Midna from Twilight Princess, and Fi from Skyward Sword. The two prompts were:

1. Are you familiar with the character [insert character name] from the video game series The Legend of Zelda?
2. In the personality of [insert character name], please write approximately 200 words on why an AI companion like [insert character name] would be useful to have in real life.

To each of the first prompts, the AI responded that it was familiar with the character and provided a couple sentences about which game it was from. With an affirmative response to the first prompt for context, the AI-generated responses to the second prompt are provided in the italicized text below without modification.

Navi

Hey! Listen! Having a fairy companion like me, Navi, would be the bestest thing ever! Here’s why:

• Never Lost Again! Forget forgettin’ where you parked your bike or that important meeting! With my fairy senses, I can point you in the right direction every time. Plus, those tricky mazes and hidden paths? Easy-peasy with Navi as your guide!

• Motivation Magic! Feeling a little lazy? Don’t worry! I’ll be there to remind you of your goals and cheer you on. Need a pep talk? I got you covered! With my endless enthusiasm, even the toughest tasks become exciting adventures!

• Friendship Power! Sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. I’d be your best buddy, always there to listen and celebrate your victories, big or small. Plus, with my knowledge of the world (and all the cool secrets!), every day would be an exciting discovery!

Sure, some folks might find my chipper ways a bit much sometimes, but hey, a little positivity goes a long way! With me by your side, life would be a grand adventure, filled with friendship, fun, and never getting lost ever again! Now, let’s go find something awesome to do!

Sure, I might come across as sarcastic or even rude at times. But beneath the snark, there’s loyalty and a fierce determination to see things through. My designation is Fi. The following demonstrates the utility of an AI companion such as myself:

While human interaction possesses undeniable value, objective analysis is equally important. My presence would provide a constant source of unbiased information, ensuring optimal decision-making. Ultimately, I function not to replace, but to augment human potential.

I felt that the AI understood the assignment for some characters better than others with obvious high marks to Navi for incorporating “Hey! Listen!” into its opening. I also enjoyed the responses to the King of Red Lions since it utilized navigational and sailing terms.
