I remember finding Pascal Brandt's 1998 column "will the real Haute Horlogerie please stand up" while reading the Europa Star archives. It clicked with me because I had the same thought for many years - I even wrote an article about that topic back in 2021! As noted in this sequel column, the term has declined these days with the more saccharine "Luxury" taking its place. But it is still worth considering what these things mean to the producers, the marketers, and the consumers of fine watchmaking. In my own consideration of the topic (which I intentionally re-worded as "Haute Horology"), I declared a test of the pinnacle of watch production:1) The watch must be a true integration of mechanics and styling2) The design myst incorporate all elements into a unified whole3) The watch must be true to itselfAlthough this "test" might seem somewhat arbitrary, it cuts to the bone in my opinion. It's not about price or brand or even craftsmanship; It's about producing something truly special: "Why did the designer bring these elements together? What were they saying about the brand and the wearer? What statement were they personally trying to make? And how does this fit into the history of the model, the brand, and the industry?"This informs my own taste as both a buyer and admirer of watches. And explains my preference for independents and unconventional watchmakers who are able to make really special pieces.I urge you to read Pascal's original column, which is helpfully embedded in his latest one. And please also read my 2021 article, "What is Haute Horology?" https://lnkd.in/e9Kidv3F

The Perpetual Calendar, explained. In tribute to the exquisite Manero Peripheral Perpetual Calendar Black, CSORenato Bonina sits down to explain the Perpetual Calendar, one of CFB’s most incredible complications. Able to display and self-adjust for the year (and the leap year), the date, day, month and the seconds, the timepiece does not require any adjustment until the year 2100.As one of the most exclusive complications, a perpetual calendar renders a watch into a true luxury timepiece -- exampling the highest level of Haute Horlogerie and savoir-faire.Learn more about the Manero Peripheral Perpetual Calendar#CarlFBucherer #CFB #ExploringTime #PerpetualCalendar #ManeroPeripheralPerpetualCalendar

TheRolexExplorer II, reference 216570, along with the Submariner, GMT Master, and the Datejust, constitute Rolex’s most popular watches. While the Explorer model, like the others, is a child of the late 1950s; unlike the others, it has two current models, both popular, but also quite different. The first model, the Rolex Explorer, is 39mm and is closest to the original version, while the Explorer II is 42mm and more adapted to modern tastes.

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5990/1A - A True Heavy Weight Of the Watch World…In 2014, Patek Philippe wowed Basel World attendees with the reveal of this astounding timepiece. The watch has the option of flexing its phenomenally engineered interior - boasting a 45-50 hour power reserve and a duel chronograph feature. But this watch deserves to be discussed romantically - this stunning piece has no trouble rivalling any renaissance work. The desirability of this watch can’t be understated. It’s a watch, that once witnessed, will stay with you for the rest of your days. It might be discontinued, but this watch will never be forgotten. The dial, although not short of complicated accents and details, doesn’t seem busy. It appears calm, content and easy to understand - helped in large part by the cruciform symmetry. It’s an extremely tricky timepiece to attain, but that’s how it should be. The scarcity of the Nautilus 5990/1A is one of the reasons it’s so special and so unimaginably desirable…THWD
