After suffering one-run losses in two of its past three games, Moncks Corner Post 126 broke through for its first victory of the season Wednesday, June 19, at home.

Post 126 pitcher Hunter Morris (Berkeley) hurled a complete game in the 10-0 victory over visiting Walterboro Post 93, giving up four hits with strikeouts. Moncks Corner plated four runs in the second and fifth innings before finishing off Walterboro in six innings in the League 1 American Legion Baseball game.

Post 126 shortstop Sumter Moorer (St. John’s Christian) and right fielder Jacob Glover (St. John’s Christian) drove in three runs apiece for Moncks Corner (1-4).

Logan Gaskins (Berkeley) and Gavin Gaskins (Berkeley) chipped in RBIs for Post 126, which finishes the three-game series at Walterboro Friday, June 21, at Colleton County High School.

Post 126 helped itself with a clean sheet defensively. It had committed 14 errors in its previous four games but didn’t make an error behind Morris.

Post 126 is at Beaufort Post 9 June 24 and 28, while hosting the Ospreys Wednesday, June 26, at St. John's Christian.

Moncks Corner wins 10U District 7 title

The Moncks Corner Diamond Youth Minors won twice on the final day of the District 7 tournament Wednesday, June 19, at Felkel Field in Goose Creek to punch a ticket to the 10U state tournament next month.

Moncks Corner begins play in the 12-team state tournament Saturday, July 6, in West Columbia.

Moncks Corner finished 4-1 in the district tournament after beating Mount Pleasant 13-6 and 7-2 to claim the title. It dropped into the loser’s bracket with a 13-3 loss to Mount Pleasant Monday, June 17, on the second day of the tournament. It stayed alive a day later with a 10-0 win over St. Andrew’s.

Moncks Corner opened up Saturday, June 15, with a 21-6 victory over North Charleston.

Citadel names Triplett new baseball coach

The Citadel named Russell Triplett as the Bulldogs’ new baseball head coach June 19. A former standout at Clemson, Triplett served as the head coach at Newberry College for the past 14 seasons, amassing an overall record of 418-278-1.

Coach Triplett garnered honors as the South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year on three occasions (2015, 2019, and 2023). Newberry secured the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2019, ranking third nationally and hosting an NCAA Regional.

Before joining the Wolves, Triplett served as the head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at USC Upstate from 2008-2010, and prior to that as a volunteer assistant at Clemson.

As a player, Triplett was a four-time letterman and a two-time second-team All-ACC shortstop at Clemson from 2000-04. He played in 222 total games for the Tigers, finishing with an overall batting average of .312. A two-time team captain, Triplett guided Clemson to four NCAA Regional appearances, two NCAA Super Regionals and a College World Series appearance in 2002.

Following graduation, Triplett competed as part of the New York Mets organization from 2004 to 2005.

Moncks Corner district runner-up

Moncks Corner's Diamond Youth Baseball coach-pitch all-stars finished runner-up in the District 7 tournament Monday, June 17, at Wescott Park in North Charleston.

Summerville's Parks Field won twice on the final day of the tournament to earn a spot in the DYB coach-pitch state tournament next month in Walterboro.

The Moncks Corner team earned the district's sportsmanship award.

Post 126 drops nail-biter

Walterboro Post 93 plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand visiting Moncks Corner Post 126 a 7-6 loss Monday, June 17, in an American Legion Baseball game at Colleton County High School.

Moorer led Post 126 with three hits and scored twice, while catcher Ryan Brewington (Cane Bay) added two hits. First baseman Mason Ritter (St. John's Christian) and pitcher Gavin Gaskins each knocked in two runs for Post 126.

Outfielder Greg Tumbleston (Timberland) added a RBI and scored twice.

Mini Stags Kiddie Camp a blast

Nearly 40 cheerleaders participated in the Berkeley High School Mini Stags Kiddie Camp June 12-14. The BHS varsity competition cheerleading team made four routines for four age groups.

BHS cheer coach Missy Loftis hosted the camp for the fifth year.

Registration open for Goose Creek City Amateur

Registration is open for the second Goose Creek City Amateur Golf Tournament.

Crowfield Golf Club and the City of Goose Creek are hosting the event, which will be limited to 120 golfers and will showcase one of the most beautiful and challenging municipal golf courses in the state.

The 36-hole tournament is set for Saturday and Sunday, July 13-14, at Crowfield. A practice round will take place on Friday, July 12. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registrations will be accepted until 5 p.m., on June 30. Last year, Patrick Stephenson, who played college golf at East Carolina, captured the inaugural championship.

The format is a 36-hole stroke play that is flighted after the first round. Players must be 13 years of age or older on the day of the tournament to be eligible for participation. Age will be verified.
