Why do prices vary so much between hospitals? Prices vary because: Insurance companies, Medicaid and Medicare all negotiate their own prices with hospitals nationwide. A patient’s insurance coverage changes for in-network and out-of-network providers. Need-based financing available from the hospital or private charities. How much will it cost for me? Your physician will create a treatment plan for you based on your unique needs, condition, medical history and his or her area of expertise. Second opinions are often helpful in exploring options and cost, in addition to easing patient anxiety. However, insurance coverage is still the most important factor in determining the cost of care. Payments made out-of-pocket, funds from health reimbursement accounts and other sources may contribute toward a plan’s deductible depending on the insurance company’s policy. For patients without insurance coverage, or who have limited financial resources, Spartanburg Regional has established a Financial Assistance Program to help cover the cost of health care for families in need. When you get emergency care or get treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, you are protected from surprise billing or balance billing. What is “balance billing” (sometimes called “surprise billing”)? When you see a doctor or other health care provider, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, such as a copayment, coinsurance, and/or a deductible. You may have other costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a health care facility that isn’t in your health plan’s network. “Out-of-network” describes providers and facilities that haven’t signed a contract with your health plan. Out-of-network providers may be permitted to bill you for the difference between what your plan agreed to pay and the full amount charged for a service.
