The top 25 teams in the Baseball America poll with records through June 9 (voting by the staff of Baseball America): Pro basketball HOUSTON The Houston Rockets will introduce their new coach Wednesday at their new arena.

It won't be a surprise. Jeff Van Gundy will join team owner Leslie Alexander and general manager Carroll Dawson at a news conference near the Rockets' new downtown home, which is under construction. Van Gundy replaced Don Nelson as Knicks coach in the 1995-96 season and went 248-172. He led New York to the 1999 NBA Finals, losing to San Antonio. Olympic basketball COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.

Van Chancellor will coach the two-time defending champion U.S. women's basketball team at the 2004 Olympics. Chancellor, who led the Houston Comets to four WNBA titles, was selected by USA Basketball, the national governing body for the sport, and approved by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Pro football NASHVILLE, Tenn.

Tennessee Titans safety Lance Schulters didn't have time to think. When a young man pulled a gun and co*cked it a few feet away, he dropped the keys to his Mercedes and ran for safety. "I don't know much about Nashville, but I know enough that you just don't co*ck a gun at somebody without using it," Schulters said Tuesday. "That made me panic right there, so I took off. I was fearing for my life at that point" Schulters had stopped for lunch Monday at a popular restaurant after working out at the Titans' headquarters a few miles away.

Schulters dropped the keys and ran across the parking lot, using his cell phone to call 911. "I don't know what could've happened if I stayed," Schulters said. "He might've wanted me to go joyriding with him or whatever. He didn't shoot me, so I guess I did the right thing." Schulters' car was recovered Tuesday, west of downtown Nashville, police said. College football NEW ORLEANS Tulane's trustees voted unanimously Tuesday not to eliminate the football team, but told the school it must reduce the amount of money the athletic department loses each year.

The board considered scrapping the program or dropping it to a lower division, but instead voted 27-0, to keep the team in Division l-A. The board passed a resolution stating Tulane will attempt to change "the culture" of NCAA programs to bring them back in line with the original purpose of athletics "as a recreational pursuit" SEATTLE An NCAA official said Tuesday the organization has made it clear that gambling isnt tolerated, suggesting Washington coach Rick Neuheisel should have known better than to enter an NCAA basketball tournament pool. "The gambling rule is not vague," said Bill Saum, the NCAA's director of agents, gambling and amateur activities. Saum wouldn't discuss Neuheisel or Washington directly, citing NCAA policy. However, the NCAA opened an investigation last week after Neuheisel admitted betting on the last two NCAA basketball tournaments.

"It is clear and direct against participation in pools and it has been clearly interpreted that way over the years," Saum said. Horse racing UNADILLA, N.Y. Spectacular Bid, a steel gray colt whose drive to win the Triple Crown in 1979 was derailed by a safety pin on the day of the Belmont Stakes, died at 27. He died of a heart attack Monday at Milfer Farm in upstate New York, just two days after Funny Cide fell short in his quest for a Triple Crown. Milfer Farm owner H.F.

Davis said Spectacular Bid was still an active stud and he will produce a 2004 foal crop. He was dominant on the track, with 26 wins in 30 starts. Record Pis 1. Rice 53-11 2 2. Cal State Fullerton 48-14 3 3.

He began teaching at Shepherd in 1973, and was the head boys basketball coach at the school for three seasons (1975-78) and girls basketball coach for two (1977-78). He also was Toby Kangas' assistant at Rocky Mountain College in 1978-79.

In 1984 he became a basketball assistant again at Shepherd, where he remained through 2000. Flotlin was one of three finalists for the job, and won out over current Gardiner coach Pat Hansen and local candidate Dick Ryan. "That was after a pretty good process, and we feel good about it," Hanser said. "I think he has a great demeanor, and is a professional a lot like Gene Espeland. It should be great for the kids." Flotlin inherits a team that went 18-6 and lost in overtime in the State A basketball championship game.

Sue seniors graduated off that squad, including All-State pick and Montana All-Star Cooper Warren. Two of the Rams' top four in scoring will return. Espeland retired after 30 seasons coaching high school ball At Central his teams went 161-110 and played in four State A title games, wmning one. "Big shoes," Hanser allowed. "I think it will be a big challenge.

But Gene was a big advocate of Pete's, and I think that will help." Reached Tuesday, Espeland said he was pleased Flotlin got the job. "He's a wonderful person," Espeland said. "He loves the kids, he has a good basketball mind. Hell do a great job." Tm just really excited to have the opportunity," Flotlin said. "In my mind, it's one of the rich-tradition schools in athletics, For the two years I've been there, the kids have been wonderful and the families have been great Tm really looking forward to it The kids work hard, they love to play the game, they want to play in the summer time." The time between head coaching stints made Flotlin somewhat a surprise candidate, but said only that he wished the circ*mstances were different "I hated to see (Espeland) retire, because every day was a gem for me," he said.

"I was either going to learn something new about basketball or get a great story about life But I did talk to him about taking the job. Ifs just something I wanted to da "It didn't take anybody to twist my arm for me to do it especially at that place. You get such support from the administration, the staff and the kids.".
