The secrets behind Kelvin Fletcher's chiselled body (2024)

There’s no two ways about it, Kelvin Fletcher is buff, and now that he’s on Strictly he’s got the whole nation checking out his chiselled body.

Kelvin, 35, played Andy Sugden for 20 years in Emmerdale, and whilst he’s no long pumping iron lifting hay bails in the Yorkshire Dales, he is cha-cha-chaing his fabulous figure across our screens on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The former soap star has been partnered up with dancer-pro Oti Mabuse and and so far he’s been seriously impressing audiences with his dance moves, including his recent sizzling samba to La Vida Es Un Carnaval by Celia Cruz.

But just how has Kelvin kept in such top shape? The Strictly star recently shared his fitness diary with GQ magazine, admitting that starring in the BBC dance show has completely changed his daily routine.

He told GQ: “I didn’t envision it being this intense. My weeks have very much changed. It’s stopped me from doing what I’d normally do in a fitness capacity and a family capacity.”

The actor from Oldham is married to Liz Marsland, who he has known from an early age, and the couple have a daughter together.

Kelvin’s workout diary also shows that the early bird catches the worm, with Monday’s diary entry reading that he gets up at 5-5.30am.

“I’ll get up at 5-5.30 in the morning. Normally I wouldn’t be training that early, I’d be in at 7am, but you do what you have to do,” he told the publication.

“Then I start dance training at 10am, which would be until 10pm. There’s a chance to get lunch where I try and get a lot of carbs. I’m on my feet all day.

“It’s quite tiring, so I’ve always been quite pro carbs – I think they’re a great thing. I probably eat about 300-350g of carbs a day.

“Carbs get a bad press, but they’re pretty important. I’ve stayed pretty lean, I’m about five kilos lighter than I was a couple of months ago. Which is fine, I think – it helps with the dancing.”

And Kelvin’s workout diary doesn’t stop there, with the Strictly celeb working out every day of the week.

On Tuesday through until Thursday he repeats his Monday workout and regarding dancing he believes it’s by the afternoon of the second day of the week that he’ll “know all of the dance.”

“On Monday I was taught the moves, by Tuesday midday I’ll know all of the dance. Then I have a couple of days to perfect the technique.”

But despite Kelvin’s strict routine, he still has chance to squeeze in family time.

He told GQ: “I’ve only got my family in the morning from 7am until 8.15am, which is my dad time. It’s not a lot at all.

“By the time I get home I’ve missed bath time and story time – that’s a challenging thing. You’re trying to squeeze that all in on Sunday and reintroduce yourself into your children's life.

“Every night I’m getting home late.”

When it comes to Thursday, Kelvin gets his train to London and rarely finds time to gym, but on Friday it’s back for some stretching at the gym in the hotel where he works on mobility before heading back to the studio and rehearsing.

Kelvin continued: ”Friday night it’s a big meal, plenty of carbohydrates, a couple of beers to help me relax and come down from the week.”

On Saturday, it’s time for “the big one” as Kelvin coins it, as he takes to the Strictly stage.

“Saturday is an early start and getting ready, getting mentally ready. Physically I feel good; I want to peak in my performance.

“I don’t want to be sore, I’m always working at 70 per cent, I’m always leaving at least three to four reps in the tank. Saturday morning I’m relaxed and I make sure my headspace is all right. With dancing it’s all about confidence. Keep hydrated: I drink at least 4 litres of water a day.”

And finally, the end of the week, and despite Kelvin having had a busy week of training he doesn’t stop on Sunday.

Kelvin said: “I might try and train, get some swimming in, otherwise it’s boring stuff: washing all my dirty clothes from the week, getting excited about the next week, finding out if I’m safe and if I will be dancing the next week and, if so, to what music.”

Well, it sounds like we’ve got our work cut out to get a bod like Kelvin’s!
