NE. Daniel Held Several Posts With N. Y. Times The Associated Press NEW YORK Clifton Daniel, the courtly Southerner who served as. managing editor of The New York Times after a career as a foreign correspondent in London, the Middie East and Moscow, died Monday at 87.

He died at his home in New York of a stroke and heart disease, said his son, Clifton Truman Daniel. As managing editor from 1964 to 1969, Daniel expanded the distinguished newspaper's coverage of culture. "He was known as an encouraging editor to work for, one who welcomed new ideas," Times reporter Deirdre Carmody wrote in 1977. "Under his influence, coverage of cultural news was expanded and more literate obituaries began to appear." Daniel became well-known outside journalistic circles when he married Margaret Truman, former President Truman's only child, in 1956. He started on North Carolina newspapers in the 1930s and spent six years with The Associated Press.

He joined the Times in 1944 to cover World War II, then held a variety of posts including foreign correspondent, Washington bureau chief and associate editor. Daniel spent his first decade as a Times staffer as a foreign correspondent. In the waning stages of World War II, he covered the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, in London and the U.S. advance into Belgium and Germany. After the war he was made the Times' chief Middle East correspondent, reporting on Arab nationalists and on battles between British forces and the Jewish underground in Palestine.

Back in London in 1952, he covered the death of King George VI and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. "The coronation was the greatest spectacle I've ever seen," he recalled years later. "It was probably the last time that the British would be able to mount such a production, as they were losing their place as an important power." In 1954 Daniel went to Moscow as the only permanent correspondent of a Western non-Communist newspaper. He won an Overseas Press Club award in 1956 for his dispatches from the Soviet capital. language of the heart FTD SHOPS LOW IT 884-1600 FLOWERS Peoples Difference.
