Police sample DNA in fatal-crash probe CUDAHY (AP) Two police officers and a sheriff's deputy went to Chicago Monday to obtain DNA samples from relatives of some of the five males killed when their car plunged off a bridge and burst into flames over the weekend.

Cudahy Police Chief Richard Wargin said he thinks authorities know the identities of the victims, but the bodies were so badly burned that they can only be confirmed with dental records or DNA. "We must make certain that any revelation of identification must be based on physical evidence and not hearsay given by relatives," he said. The 22-year-old driver was from Milwaukee and the others were Mexicans aged 17, 20, 27 and 32 living in Chicago, the department said. Two were brothers, Wargin said. It was unclear if they were U.S.

residents, he said. Sylvia Gonzales, 47, told The Associated Press that her family is sure the driver was Juan Franco Vega. Her niece, Amanda Martinez, was his girlfriend and mother of their nearly 1- year-old son. Vega had borrowed her niece's car the vehicle that crashed and hasn't been heard from since, she said. The car was speeding on Highway 794 at around 3 a.m.

Saturday when it didn't stop at the end of a ramp that takes traffic to the Layton Avenue bridge near Mitchell International Airport, police said. Instead of turning, the 1996 Dodge Intrepid went straight, smashed through a concrete barrier and plummeted about 35 feet to a gravel road below where it burst into a fireball.
