5,000 evacuated in New Mexico as 2 wildfires spread with 0% containment: Officials
Approximately 5,000 people have been evacuated in New Mexico on Tuesday as crews battle two wildfires that have spread across 20,000 acres, officials said. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency as the dual South Fork Fire and Salt Fire have spread with 0% containment as of Tuesday afternoon. Evacuation orders are in effect for three counties in the state: Mescalero, Otero and Lincoln, Grisham said during a Tuesday press conference.

Justin Timberlake arrested, charged with DWI in the Hamptons
Singer Justin Timberlake has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons, according to police. Timberlake drove through a stop sign and swerved into a lane of oncoming traffic at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday, according to Sag Harbor Village police. When police pulled him over, they said Timberlake "was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition," according to police.

Boeing CEO David Calhoun apologized to the families of victims of previous plane crashes involving the company's planes, including the 737 Max, before being grilled by senators Tuesday during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Sen. Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said Tuesday that the U.S. continues to withhold a single shipment of heavy bombs to Israel and that a final decision on that shipment hasn’t been made. Ryder declined to address Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s accusation that the U.S. is slowing weapon shipments to Israel in general.

Club Q mass shooter sentenced to life in prison on federal hate crime charges
The shooter who killed five and injured over a dozen more at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2022 accepted a plea deal Tuesday in connection with federal hate crimes charges and was given 55 concurrent life sentences. Aldrich initially pleaded not guilty. United States District Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney accepted the plea agreement, sentencing Aldrich to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be followed by a 190-year sentence of imprisonment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived on a state visit to Pyongyang, and was met at the airport by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. In the history of bilateral relations between Russia and North Korea, this is just the second visit by the head of the Russian state. Putin also made the first visit by a Russian leader to Pyongyang in 2000.

2nd-largest school district votes to ban cellphones and social media for students
The nation's second-largest school district has voted to ban cellphone and social media use for over 429,000 K-12 students during school days. The Los Angeles Unified School District board passed the ban by a vote of 5 to 2 on Tuesday morning, one day after U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy called for an immediate warning label on social media platforms in a New York Times op-ed, similar to warnings on cigarette packs mandated by Congress in the 1960s. Jessica Quindel, a math teacher at Venice High School in the district, spoke prior to the vote and called for the proposal to pass.

Migrant arrested in rape of 13-year-old in Queens park
Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, a 25-year-old Ecuadorian migrant who entered the U.S. illegally in June 2021, was picked up overnight after community members recognized him from a photo and video released by police, according to the New York Police Department. Inga-Landi waived his Miranda rights and told police he had a drug problem and had never done anything like this before, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny. NYPD Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry praised the community efforts that led to the suspect being taken into custody in an interview with New York ABC station WABC.

6 major blazes burning as early start to the California wildfire season intensifies
Just as firefighters were getting the upper hand on multiple major wildfires burning across California, two new blazes broke out and rapidly spread overnight, dealing additional challenges to the crews battling the flames, authorities said. In what fire officials called an unusually early start to the state's wildfire season, firefighters were scrambling to gain control of at least six massive wildland fires burning at both ends of the Golden State. On Monday, two new wildfires erupted in Northern California, including one called the Sites Fire that ignited around 2:30 p.m. PT in Colusa County, about 60 miles north of Sacramento, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

New York's highest court on Tuesday declined to take up a challenge to the limited gag order imposed on former President Donald Trump by the judge who oversaw his criminal hush money trial. The New York Court of Appeals rejected Trump's appeal "upon the ground that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved." Judge Juan Merchan prohibited Trump from discussing witnesses, jurors and others associated with his criminal trial, which ended in a conviction last month.

A 14-year-old fatally shot a 13-year-old girl. Now his father is on trial.
The trial began this week against William Brown, 39, the father of the 14-year-old boy who fatally shot a 13-year-old girl nearly a year ago. Brown is the first person to be charged under the Bennie Hargrove Gun Safety Act, aka "Bennie's Law," a New Mexico law that allows adults to be held criminally liable for negligently allowing a minor to access a firearm. The teen was tried for second-degree murder, as well as tampering with evidence and assaulting a police officer, but the case ended with a hung jury in March.

Heat alerts are in effect in at least 19 states in the Midwest and Northeast, with some areas expecting to see their hottest days in 30 years. Record highs were shattered Monday in the Midwest and Northeast: Toledo, Ohio, hit 99 degrees; Chicago reached 97 degrees; Cleveland recorded 96 degrees; and Syracuse, New York, soared to 94 degrees. On Tuesday, temperatures are forecast to climb to a scorching 97 degrees in Pittsburgh and Syracuse; 93 degrees in Chicago and Detroit; 92 in Washington, D.C.; and 90 in Boston.
